Using the Taxonomy Matcher: A Comprehensive Guide
Welcome to the Taxonomy Matcher! This guide will walk you through the various ways to input your product data and select taxonomies to get accurate category matches.
1. Accessing the Matcher
Navigate to the Matcher page from the main navigation bar after logging in.
2. Providing Product Data
You have three primary ways to provide your product data:
a. Paste CSV Data
This is useful for quick tests or small batches of products.
- Select Input Type: Choose the "Paste CSV Data" radio button.
- Format Your Data:
- Your data must be in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, but using a semicolon (
;) as the delimiter. - The first row must be a header row containing at least
id,title, anddescription. - Example:
id;title;description SKU001;Wireless Headphones;High-quality over-ear wireless headphones with noise cancellation. SKU002;Men's Cotton T-Shirt;Comfortable and durable 100% cotton t-shirt for men.
- Your data must be in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, but using a semicolon (
- Paste Data: Copy your semicolon-delimited CSV data (including the header) and paste it into the text area provided.
- Character Limits: Fields longer than 2000 characters will be automatically truncated.
b. Upload CSV File
Ideal for larger product lists.
- Select Input Type: Choose the "Upload CSV File" radio button.
- Prepare Your File:
- Ensure your file is a
.csvfile. - The CSV must use a semicolon (
;) as the delimiter. - The first row must be a header row containing at least
id,title, anddescription.

- Upload File: Click the "Select CSV file" input and choose your prepared CSV file.
- Save Product List (Optional):
- After selecting a file, an option to "Save as new product list" will appear.
- Click this if you want to save the uploaded CSV for future use.
- You'll be prompted to provide a Name (required) and an optional Description for your product list.
- Click "Save" to store it. You can manage these saved lists from the "Product Lists" page in your dashboard.
c. Use Saved Product List
If you have previously saved product lists, you can easily reuse them.
- Select Input Type: Choose the "Use Saved Product List" radio button.
- Select List: A dropdown will appear with your saved product lists. Choose the one you want to use.
- If you have no saved lists, a link to "Manage your product lists" will guide you to the page where you can upload and save new ones.
3. Selecting a Taxonomy
You can choose between the default Google Product Taxonomy or a custom taxonomy.
a. Use Default (Google Product Taxonomy)
- Select Taxonomy Type: Choose the "Use Default (Google Product Taxonomy)" radio button.
- This is the default selection and uses a comprehensive, up-to-date version of the Google Product Taxonomy.
b. Upload Custom Taxonomy
Provide your own taxonomy structure.
- Select Taxonomy Type: Choose the "Upload Custom Taxonomy" radio button.
- Prepare Your File:
- Your custom taxonomy must be a plain text (
.txt) file. - Each category path should be on a new line.
- Hierarchy within a category path is denoted by
>(space, greater than sign, space). - Example
example_taxonomy.txt:Electronics > Audio > Headphones > Over-Ear Headphones Electronics > Audio > Speakers > Bluetooth Speakers Clothing > Men's Wear > Shirts > T-Shirts Clothing > Women's Wear > Dresses > Summer Dresses
- Your custom taxonomy must be a plain text (
- Upload File: Click the "Upload a custom taxonomy" input and select your
.txtfile. - Save Taxonomy (Optional):
- After selecting a file, an option to "Save as new taxonomy" will appear.
- Click this if you want to save the uploaded taxonomy for future use.
- You'll be prompted for a Name (required) and an optional Description.
- Click "Save" to store it. You can manage these saved taxonomies from the "Manage Taxonomies" page in your dashboard.
- Download Example: An example taxonomy file (
example_taxonomy.txt) can be downloaded from the link provided on the Matcher page.
c. Use Saved Taxonomy
If you have previously saved custom taxonomies, you can select them here.
- Select Taxonomy Type: Choose the "Use Saved Taxonomy" radio button.
- Select Taxonomy: A dropdown will appear with your saved custom taxonomies. Choose the one you want to use.
- If you have no saved taxonomies, a link to "Manage your taxonomies" will guide you to the page where you can create or upload new ones.
4. Starting the Matching Process
- Once your product data and taxonomy selections are made, click the "Start Matching" button.
- The button will be disabled if no product data is provided.
- A loading indicator will show while the matching is in progress.
5. Viewing and Downloading Results
- Results Display: After processing, the matched categories for each product ID will be displayed in a table.
- Error Handling:
- If there are issues with your input data (e.g., missing columns, exceeding character limits), an error message will be displayed.
- If you have insufficient credits, you'll be notified and prompted to buy more.
- Download CSV: Click the "Download CSV" button above the results table to download your matches as a semicolon-delimited CSV file.
Tips for Best Results
- Ensure your product
titleanddescriptionfields are clear, detailed, and accurate. - For custom taxonomies, ensure the structure is logical and covers the scope of your products.
- Regularly review and update your custom taxonomies as your product catalog evolves.
